Cathedral Cove walk and Hot Water Beach attract thousands of visitors a year, however the social impact can be minimized if we all think of ways we can reduce our individual carbon footprints.

Here at Ferry Landing Lodge we take our responsibility seriously and are committed to contributing, in any way we can:

• We work alongside DOC with wildlife conservation by setting traps for possums who are responsible for destroying NZ bush and endangering local wildlife.

• We are members and supporters of Kauri 2000 Coromandel. The Millennium project, now in its 10th year, that has seen thousands of Kauri trees planted on reserve land all over The Coromandel Peninsula.

• We are and use only environmentally friendly, biodegradable products or non-toxic cleaning products purchased locally.
  

We also:

• Collect & use pure filtered rainwater, using the resources wisely.
  
• Have reduced water consumption by fitting volume-reducing devices to showers and installing dual flush toilets.
  
• Encourage guest to use our 'towel and linen change' agreement and recycle grey water for gardens and fruit trees.
• Use the principle of 'companion planting' in our garden to eliminate the need for harmful sprays.
  
• Support our local business community by purchasing organic products grown locally.
  
• Rather than take the car to Whitianga, to buy supplies, we go across on the ferryboat, taking a shopping trolley to carry our purchases.
  
• We further reduce waste by buying in bulk whenever we go to Auckland or Hamilton.

• Walk to local beaches or use the mountain bikes we provide to explore Whitianga. This will lessen your carbon footprint and help burn off those extra calories.
  

• You're also invited to join Rob on a guided walk to Whitianga Rock, adjacent to the lodge. It has a rich European and Maori history that we like to share.
